Don Byron on Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, and Sax, has often produced albums that focus on one sub-genre, but this album is truly a beauty, straying from Modern Jazz to Pop to Fusion to whatever, and it really keeps you on your toes the whole time wondering what the hell he's gonna do next.
And boy, what killer sidemen. Most of the album is just in trio format, with Jack Dejohnette on drums and Jason Moran on Piano. Dejohnette really needs no introduction, he is truly a master and he's played with everyone. Jason Moran, a more contemporary artist, is really becoming one of my favorites, he's played with Charles Lloyd and many others.
The other thing that really attracts me to this album is the instrumentation, no bass player is interesting, and sort of provides a less classic quartet sound, and provides more space. However, Bassist Lonnie Plaxico and trumpeter Ralph Alessi join the trio on selected tracks.
The repertoire covered here is amazing. Ranging from "In A silent way" to "I want to be Happy" to "Freddie Freeloader" to dixieland, pure fun.
